The Mustangs

Would you like to take a mustang home?  View a few of the mustangs that are up for adoption on the adoption page.

They're here!  At approximately 11:00 a.m. on November 12, 2009 the first load of 11 Mustangs were unloaded to their new home in sunny California.

A tremendous thank you goes to Thomas Shields and Jennifer Picket of Shields Family Hauling and Performance Horses for their hard work in transporting them to us.  While they could have crammed more horses into the trailer, these caring and generous horse people offered to make three separate trips from Texas.

Here are a few quick shots of our new friends.  More photos and details about these wonderful symbols of the American west will be forthcoming so stay tuned.

The Mustangs Story

In April 2009, nearly 200 horses were rescued from the 3-Strikes Mustang Ranch in Nebraska in one of the largest equine rescue operations in Nebraska history. When the ranch was raided, they found the nearly 200 mustangs living in crowded, filthy pens without access to proper food and untreated medical conditions.

Unfortunately, help came too late for approximately 60 horses and burros found dead on the property.

"This is one of the most disturbing cases of cruelty that I have come across in many years of equine rescue," said Jerry Finch, director of Habitat for Horses. "These mustangs are part of our American history and deserve respect and proper care."

Over 80 horses were moved to the Cleveland Armory Black Beauty animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas, where the HSUS and The Grace Foundation of Northern California provided medical and farrier care, behavior assessment, basic ground training, and adoption assistance.  The remaining mustangs will soon be moving to the Grace Foundation Ranch in El Dorado Hills, California where they will continue their training and be available for adoption
